WAY 01
LONGNIGHT
On the longest night of the year, someone carried the Dawn Lantern
from Lantern Harbor to Morning Gate.
This year, Papa Malik chose Ayo to walk beside him.
The road crossed twelve glassroot terraces, where crystal roots rose
from the earth like frozen waves.
Papa lifted the lantern. Ayo counted its five colors. Together, they
stepped into the dark.

WAY 02
I NEED HELP
At the first terrace, the Longnight wind struck.
Papa's broad copper sash snapped behind him. The lantern swung once,
twice, and pulled his arm toward the cliff wall.
He set it down.
“I cannot carry this through that wind alone,” he said. “Ayo, I need help.”
No grown-up had ever said those words to her before.

WAY 03
THE LOW PATH
Ayo took the lantern.
From her height, its teal beam slid beneath the crystal roots. A thin
silver path appeared there, too low for Papa to see.
“This way,” she said.
Papa did not pretend he had known. He followed her small violet boots
through the shining maze.
The lantern felt lighter when someone trusted where she could see.

WAY 04
THE GLASSROOT ARCH
The path narrowed beneath an arch of blue glassroot.
Ayo could pass. Papa could not.
She crawled through with the lantern while Papa walked around the
arch. On the other side, a hard gust caught Ayo's yellow cape.
Papa reached over the root and held the cape steady.
One found the passage. One guarded the light.

WAY 05
MIRROR FIELD
Beyond the arch lay Mirror Field.
Five lanterns became fifty. Fifty paths raced in every direction.
Ayo stopped. “I cannot tell which light is ours.”
Papa stretched his copper sash between two roots. Its wide shadow
covered the false reflections.
Only one hexagonal lantern kept glowing.
This time, Ayo followed Papa.

WAY 06
THE HUMMING STEPS
The black stone steps hummed beneath their feet.
Ayo hurried. The note turned sharp, and the next step faded into
darkness.
Papa placed one copper boot on the stone. He felt the slow vibration
travel through the sole.
“Wait for the deep note,” he said.
They stepped together: low hum, high hum, low hum, rest.

WAY 07
THE WIND BRIDGE
At the Wind Bridge, the sky opened below them.
Ayo held the lantern low so it would not catch the gusts. Papa walked on
the windward side. Their free hands stayed joined.
The bridge shook. The amber flame bent but did not go out.
Neither pulled the other forward.
They crossed at the speed of two people listening.

WAY 08
THE FOG BASIN
Silver fog filled the eighth terrace.
Papa could not see a high beacon. Ayo could not see the stones at her
feet.
So they set the lantern between them and became still.
Far away, the harbor tide-bell rang.
The echo returned from their left.
They turned toward the sound and found the road again.

WAY 09
THREE ROADS
At the edge of the fog, the path divided into three.
Papa studied the stars. Ayo studied the lantern. Neither clue was
enough.
“I am afraid of choosing wrong,” Papa said.
Ayo squeezed his hand. “Then we will choose slowly.”
They tested each road with one colored beam and watched how the
glassroots answered.

WAY 10
HIGH + LOW
The left road reflected teal but led back to the fog.
The right road reflected amber but ended at a wall.
On the middle road, Papa saw the Morning Gate above the ridge. At the
same moment, Ayo saw silver stepping-stones below it.
The high clue and the low clue crossed.
Together, they had one whole map.

WAY 11
BETWEEN THEM
The final rise was steep.
The Dawn Lantern had gathered every color of Longnight. It was too
heavy for Ayo. It was too awkward for Papa.
Papa slipped its handle over his copper sash. Ayo held one end. Papa
held the other.
The lantern traveled between them, level and bright.
Step by shared step, they climbed.

WAY 12
MORNING GATE
They reached Morning Gate as the first sunlight touched the glassroots.
Ayo and Papa raised the lantern into its silver cradle. Five colors opened across the
harbor, and the long road shone behind them.
“Who carried it?” Ayo asked.
Papa smiled.
“You did. I did. We did.”
And morning entered between them.
