Jun and the Twelve Doors That Opened Outward

DOOR 01 THE LISTENING GARDEN After the storm, Jun found twelve doors standing in a circle inside the old glasshouse. Every door opened inward. Beyond them waited a moth, a fox, an otter, an owl, a tortoise, a frog, a porcupine, a bat, a sand cat, and a seal. "A door should know both directions," Jun said.

DOOR 02 MOON MEADOW / LUNA MOTH Jun lifted his brass listening horn. A luna moth brushed the rim with one pale wing. The first door smelled of clover and moon-warmed grass. Jun turned its silver hinge around. The moth flew outward, carrying no shadow away from the garden.

DOOR 03 BRAMBLEWOOD / RED FOX KIT A red fox kit touched one paw to a door tangled in blackberry vines. Jun did not pull the fox closer. He moved the hinge, then moved aside. The fox slipped home through leaves that shone like little green windows.

DOOR 04 MOVING RIVER / RIVER OTTER The river otter rolled a blue glass pebble toward Jun. Behind the next door, water hurried over bright stones. Jun widened the threshold until the river could pass without becoming a puddle. The otter followed the current outward.

DOOR 05 WIND TOWER / BARN OWL The barn owl waited on a brass rail. It wanted height, not a shelf. Jun opened a door onto wind, bells, and a tower under the stars. The owl rose without a sound, and one loose feather turned slowly behind it.

DOOR 06 SUNSTONES / TORTOISE The tortoise had carried patience all night. Its door opened onto warm flat stones, thyme, and a small cup of rainwater. Jun lowered the step. The tortoise crossed at its own speed, which was exactly fast enough.

DOOR 07 RAINLEAF / TREE FROG A green tree frog waited beneath a copper watering rose. Jun heard rain ticking on broad leaves beyond the seventh door. When he turned the hinge outward, the frog sprang through one silver drop and vanished into a chorus of croaks.

DOOR 08 ROOTWOOD / PORCUPINE The porcupine needed a doorway wide enough for every quill. Jun measured with his arms, then opened the rootwood arch from the far side. The porcupine waddled outward. Not one quill had to be folded small.

DOOR 09 STAR CAVE / SILVER BAT The silver bat listened to Jun's horn, then answered with a sound too high for Jun to hear. He watched its ears instead. The ninth door opened into a cave where crystals held the starlight. The bat flew home by echoes Jun could only imagine.

DOOR 10 NIGHT DUNES / SAND CAT The sand cat's paws left four tiny prints in a tray of dust. Beyond the tenth door, night dunes curved under a violet sky. Jun shaded the bright lantern. The cat stepped outward when the light became gentle enough.

DOOR 11 TIDE / SEAL PUP The seal pup tapped twice beside a round door of sea glass. Jun waited for the tide to rise on the other side. Only then did he reverse the heavy hinge. The door opened outward into foam, and the seal slid home on one shining wave.

DOOR 12 RETURNING / OPEN BOTH WAYS Two doors remained: one for Jun's town, and one for any traveler the garden had yet to meet. Jun left both unlatched. This garden was not for keeping anyone. It was a place for listening until the right direction became clear. By dawn, all twelve doors opened outward - and every one could open inward again.
