Almost ready

Koa looks up at Dad in their warmly lit hallway while an orange cat sits beside the bookshelf.

Koa had brushed his teeth and found his pajamas.

Dad turned the hall lamp low.

'Ready?' he asked.

'Almost,' said Koa.

Almost had several places still to visit.

The bus stop

Koa crouches by the living-room shelf and rolls his red toy bus into the space underneath.

The red bus waited beside the sofa.

Koa rolled it under the shelf.

'Last stop,' he whispered.

He checked that its wheels were straight.

A bus should be comfortable at the end of a day.

A book with a bookmark

Koa closes a blue book with its ribbon marking a place while Dad and the orange cat watch.

His book lay open on the chair.

He slipped the ribbon between the pages and closed it.

The story could wait in there.

Koa patted the cover, just to let it know.

The round cushion

Koa points at a round orange cushion leaning sideways on the sofa while Dad waits in the doorway.

The sofa cushion had fallen sideways.

He stood it up.

It fell sideways again.

Koa considered this.

'Perhaps that's how you sleep.'

He left it as it was.

At the window

Koa and the orange cat look through the window at the lit and dark windows across the courtyard.

Across the courtyard, windows shone in different colors.

Someone pulled a curtain.

One square went dark.

Koa waved at the other squares.

They were busy being windows and did not wave back.

A quiet bowl

Koa crouches quietly beside the kitchen cabinets while the orange cat drinks from its low bowl.

In the kitchen, the cat's bowl made a little click.

The cat was having a late drink.

Koa waited until it finished.

Some goodnights should not interrupt anything.

A tail went past

The orange cat rubs against Koa's leg in the hallway as Dad smiles just behind him.

He offered the cat a goodnight.

The cat rubbed his ankle and walked away.

Its tail brushed his knee.

That seemed to be an answer, although it had no words.

The last corner

Koa looks back from his bedroom doorway toward Dad and the warm pool of light in the hall.

Koa reached his bedroom.

Then he remembered the hall.

He looked back around the door.

The lamp made a soft pool on the floor.

'Goodnight to that bit, too.'

Dad waits

Dad tucks the blue blanket around Koa, who smiles up from his pillow in plum pajamas.

Dad sat on the edge of the bed.

'Was it a long journey?'

'Quite long,' Koa said.

He climbed under the blue blanket.

Dad tucked in the corner that always escaped.

One sound left

Dad sits on the bed's edge while Koa lies beneath the blue blanket and listens beside him.

A bus passed far below the window.

Koa listened until its sound grew small.

Then the apartment creaked.

'That wasn't me,' Dad whispered.

Koa smiled into his pillow.

The small goodnight

Dad leans close with one hand resting on the blue blanket as Koa gives him a quiet goodnight.

There were no more corners to visit.

No wheels to straighten.

Dad touched the blanket once.

Koa said a very small goodnight.

It did not need to go farther than the bed.

Arrived

Koa sleeps under the blue blanket while the orange cat curls on the floor and light enters through the partly open door.

Dad left the door a little open.

The hall light lay in a narrow line.

Koa's eyes followed it halfway across the floor.

The rest of the journey could wait until morning.

The end. Or a beginning.

Talk together

  1. Which goodnight takes Koa the longest?
  2. What does Dad do while Koa finishes his journey?
  3. Which quiet sounds would you hear in your own room?

Bedtime can be a journey through familiar things. Koa takes his time, and Dad keeps him company until the journey ends.
