A passenger

Omi kneels on the stone causeway beside a blue toy boat with a silver tree shape shining across its deck.

Omi's toy boat was meant to carry pebbles.

Tonight it carried a tree.

A very flat, very silver tree, small enough to fit the deck.

Its branches rippled across the deck.

A wandering thing

Omi holds the blue boat in both paws while MOTE rests near her shoulder above the coral vest.

MOTE settled by Omi's shoulder.

'A reflection,' Omi said.

Cat Sea reflections sometimes wandered.

This one had found a boat before it had found its way home.

The apple tree

Omi lowers the boat beside an apple tree whose rounded crown differs from the silver branches on the deck.

She carried it to the apple pool.

The real tree stood round and busy above the water.

Her passenger was long and trailing.

'Not your branches,' Omi decided.

The tall fir

Omi watches the boat in a pool beside a tall pointed fir under a full moon and aurora.

At the next pool stood a fir.

It pointed upward like a tidy brush.

The little silver branches bent down.

MOTE followed Omi to the next bend.

A pause on the bridge

Omi rests the boat on the bridge as thin silver branches stretch over its edge toward the water below.

On the broad low bridge, Omi rested the boat.

Its silver passenger stretched toward the water.

The deck held only the middle of the shape.

Omi leaned closer.

The long branches

Omi examines the many silver branches across the boat while real willow leaves hang above the neighboring pool.

There were more branches than she had first seen.

Thin ones, all leaning the same way.

Beyond the bridge, something brushed the pool.

MOTE hovered beside her.

The willow pool

Omi holds the silver passenger beside a willow whose reflection is missing from the plain dark water beneath it.

A willow stood over the quietest pool.

Its leaves hung almost to the surface.

Omi looked into the water.

The place beneath the tree was strangely plain.

A small turn

Omi keeps a paw on the little boat beside the causeway, turning its silver branches toward the willow.

She set the toy boat in the shallows and kept one paw on its side.

The silver branches pointed away from the willow.

Omi turned the boat.

Now they pointed toward it.

The first branch

Omi steadies the boat as silver light spills from its deck and branches across the dark pool.

One silver branch slipped off the deck.

It touched the water and grew long.

Another followed.

Omi held the boat still.

Home beneath the leaves

Omi holds the empty blue boat while a full silver willow reflection fills the pool below the real tree.

The reflection unfolded across the pool.

Above it, the willow stirred.

Below it, the silver branches stirred, too.

The boat was light in Omi's paw.

A different load

Omi carries the boat with one smooth pebble on its deck as MOTE follows her along the causeway.

On the way back, Omi put a smooth pebble in the boat.

It stayed exactly where she put it.

This was useful.

It was also a little less surprising.

Looking down

Omi tilts her head toward her matching reflection while the blue boat holds its pebble beside the stone edge.

She stopped at her own pool.

A small silver cat looked up at her.

Omi tilted one ear.

Her reflection tilted one ear, too.

Everything appeared to be home.

The end. Or a beginning.

Talk together

  1. What clues tell Omi which tree the reflection belongs to?
  2. Why does she turn the boat near the willow?
  3. What does the boat carry after its passenger goes home?

In Cat Sea, reflections sometimes wander. Omi's toy boat carries one home by following its shape, with MOTE nearby to notice what she notices.
