Parade weather

Lulo stands beside Gran's armchair as they look through the rain-streaked window at flowers outside the cottage.

The rain marched down Thimble Lane.

Lulo watched it from Gran's window.

'No parade today,' he said.

Gran moved her chair a little closer.

'Not in the lane, perhaps.'

The first marcher

Lulo places a small wooden duck on the low table while Gran watches from her nearby chair.

Lulo found a wooden duck beneath the dresser.

It was small enough to carry in one paw.

He set it on the table.

It looked ready to go somewhere.

A useful wagon

Lulo holds the wooden duck above an empty four-wheeled cart as Gran leans across the table to watch.

His little cart could carry the duck.

But then who would walk at the front?

Lulo put the duck down again.

The cart would carry something else.

The flags

Lulo arranges three paper flags, red, blue and yellow, in the cart beside the little wooden duck.

He folded scraps of colored paper around blunt wooden pegs.

A red flag. A blue flag. A yellow one as bright as a petal.

The cart looked taller already.

A very small band

Lulo taps a wooden spool with a slender peg beside the duck and cart with three colored flags.

A wooden thread spool made a drum.

Lulo tapped it with a little wooden peg.

The wooden duck said nothing.

Lulo supplied a quack.

The tall problem

The red, blue and yellow flags lean together while Lulo pushes the little cart across the wooden table.

The blue flag leaned against the red one.

The yellow flag leaned against both.

Lulo gave the cart a push.

All three bowed together.

A shorter sky

Lulo adjusts three shorter flags in the cart while Gran watches beside the wooden duck and spool.

He set the flags lower in the cart.

Now the cart could roll without bowing.

The yellow one made a sunny corner.

Lulo liked knowing which one it was.

More feet

Lulo arranges the wooden rabbit and duck in front of a cart carrying a soft gray mouse beneath three flags.

A wooden rabbit joined the duck.

A cloth mouse came out of Lulo's pocket.

The mouse had to ride. Its legs were rather floppy.

At last the cart had a passenger.

The long way

The toy parade passes a teapot and breadboard while Gran lifts her knitting above the little wooden animals.

Lulo pushed the parade around the teapot.

Past the breadboard.

Under Gran's raised knitting.

It took a surprisingly long time to cross one table.

The best place

Lulo raises the wooden duck toward Gran beside the window, while other toys remain on the low table.

From her chair, Gran could only see the tallest flag.

Lulo considered the window ledge.

He carried the parade over, one marcher at a time.

The duck went first again.

Here it comes

Gran watches beside Lulo as the duck, rabbit and cloth-mouse cart line up along the broad window ledge.

At window height, the little cart looked splendid.

Lulo tapped the spool. Gran hummed a marching tune.

The duck rolled past her.

Outside, the rain was a very large audience.

The return journey

The wooden duck and rabbit approach a purple flowerpot, followed by the cloth mouse in its three-flag cart.

The parade went all the way to the flowerpot.

Then it turned for home.

Gran hummed the tune backward, or as nearly backward as she could.

The cloth mouse rode both ways.

The end. Or a beginning.

Talk together

  1. Which part of Lulo's parade makes a sound?
  2. Why does he change the tall flag?
  3. Where would a very small parade look enormous?

Lulo's parade grows smaller as it gets closer to its audience. Its journey runs from the kitchen table to the best seat in the house.
