A house of her own

Rumi drapes a plum blanket across a sturdy low table and tucks an edge beneath a cushion.

Rumi spread the plum blanket across the low table.

She tucked one edge under a cushion and let the other fall to the floor.

Inside was a house exactly her size.

Everything came in

Rumi holds her soft rabbit just inside the blanket house; her picture book and pillow lie nearby.

She brought her pillow, a picture book and her soft rabbit.

The rabbit had to come through the door sideways.

Rumi pushed its tail in last.

Now everything was home.

The door closed

Mika sits outside the plum blanket house while Rumi lowers its last open corner from inside.

Mika sat outside in his blue pajamas.

'What is it like in there?'

'It's mine,' said Rumi.

She let the last corner fall closed.

A very large sock

Alone inside the dim blanket house, Rumi touches a rolled green sock beneath a soft bear-shaped shadow.

It was dark beneath the table.

Something beside the pillow looked like a crouching bear.

Rumi touched it with one paw.

It was her spare sock, behaving very grandly.

No picture at all

Rumi squints at her picture book in the dim blanket house, with her toy rabbit beside her.

She opened the book.

She could feel the pages turning, but she could not see the pictures.

The rabbit did not seem to mind.

Rumi did.

A little light

Rumi lifts a small blanket corner, letting warm lamplight cross her book and reveal Mika sitting outside.

She lifted a corner.

A ribbon of lamplight crossed the floor.

Mika's blue knee appeared beyond it.

'Are you still there?' Rumi asked.

Still there

Mika slides a soft cloth carrot through the opening while Rumi waits beside the toy rabbit inside.

'Yes,' said Mika. 'Your rabbit dropped this.'

He slid a little cloth carrot through the gap.

Rumi put it beside the rabbit.

She left the corner up a moment longer.

A window

From inside, Rumi lifts a folded opening and looks out at Mika and the electric globe lamp in the bedroom.

Rumi folded the blanket edge over itself.

It made a small opening above the floor.

Through it she could see Mika, the lamp, and a small piece of the room.

Her house was still there.

The view

Rumi smiles at Mika's two paws and blue cuffs held up outside her blanket window.

Mika held up his paws like branches.

'A tree,' he said.

Then he made one paw hop across the window.

Rumi's house had acquired a very peculiar garden.

An invitation

Rumi makes space beside her pillow and lifts the blanket door while Mika approaches holding the soft cloth carrot.

Rumi moved her pillow a little.

She moved the rabbit a little more.

'You can come in for one story,' she said.

Mika brought the carrot.

One story, together

Rumi and Mika read together beneath the plum blanket, with the toy rabbit between them.

They read by the light from the window.

Mika turned the pages. Rumi pointed at the pictures.

The rabbit sat between them.

Its carrot was the only thing that did not need a place to sit.

A window for morning

Rumi rests alone on a pillow beneath the blanket and looks toward the moonlit bedroom window.

When Mika went to bed, Rumi closed the door.

She left the window folded open.

From her pillow she could see the garden moon.

Her house had a view.

The end. Or a beginning.

Talk together

  1. What can Rumi see with the window folded open?
  2. How does Mika know he is welcome?
  3. What would you put inside your own blanket house?

Rumi's blanket house is a place she makes for herself. Its window is something she chooses to open, and its door can still close when she wants quiet.
